Book Review: Stolen Tongue by Felix Blackwell
Synopsis:
A romantic cabin getaway doesn’t go exactly as planned.
High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn’t just mumbling in her sleep – she’s whispering back.
Originally a contest-winning story on reddit.com’s horror community NoSleep, Stolen Tongues has received widespread acclaim and is now being adapted into a feature film.
Review:
Let me begin by mentioning that the horror genre is something I try to stay away from as much as possible; this stems from a terrible television program I watched as a child. You could say it was traumatic, therefore I try to stay away from anything horrifying in any way, shape, or form. Having saying that, reading Stolen Tongues was a challenge. Consider me scared with all I've read; the atmosphere was by far the best thing this book had to offer me, being spooky, evocative, and intriguing.
This book started off strong, and I was completely immersed in the story, but my first thought was that something didn't add up. The addition of mystery enhances the book's appeal; I proceeded with caution, noting every detail as much as possible. The setting of this book works well for me; it's so descriptive that you can imagine yourself in a snowy cabin with a supernatural creature haunting you. After a few chills and thrills, there were boring details and repetitive scenarios; everything went downhill for me after that. I couldn't wrap my head around what was going on with Faye and Felix; they were in trouble with this so-called Impostor but, for lack of a better term, did the bare minimum to deal with it. It seems absurd to return to retrieve a ring when you already know the location is haunted. Everything that happened after that made me nauseous; the level of comprehension of the plot left me exhausted.
Overall, I believe this book provided me with a fantastic experience in terms of chilling and terrifying emotions. I guess my emotions clouded my judgment of this book because I was on the edge of my seat the majority of the time. Despite my ratings, I would still recommend this book if you want to read something scary, but keep your expectations in check.
That’s all for now ~
